Local Volunteering

LOCAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
limited to the atlanta area

Volunteers play an important role in our day-to-day operations, as well as with special events. We could not do what we do without the help of our wonderful volunteer team!

All volunteers are required to be 18 years of age. There are two volunteer tracks, with a required 2 hour per month minimum commitment. Volunteers are required to attend 5 weeks of lecture classes, which meet on Sunday afternoons, followed by 9 weeks of hands on dog training held weekdays and evenings. All classes must be completed prior to volunteering. After completing volunteer training, volunteers work closely with our trainers to nurture, socialize and prepare our dogs to meet their future recipients.

Volunteers can participate in the following areas:

  • Grooming - grooming the dogs to keep them beautiful and healthy.
  • Training sessions and outings - reinforcing commands and taking dogs on public outings. This is instrumental in exposing the dogs to a variety of environments, which they will encounter once placed with a recipient.
  • Home-visits - taking dogs home for weekend visits to reinforce and generalize commands, as well as help the dogs acclimate to a home environment.
  • Animal Assisted Education and Therapy -
    > Give presentations about Canine Assistants to community organizations and perform dog demonstrations for our education programs (including our disability awareness presentation for children) for schools and community organizations.
    > Participate in animal assisted therapy sessions at assisted living facilities, physical rehabilitation centers, and at Canine Assistants' farm.
    > Give tours of our facility.
    > Participate in the K-9 Kids Reading Program.
  • Special events - staffing information tables or booths at events where Canine Assistants is participating, helping with fundraisers.
  • Cleaning and maintenance - helping us stay neat and tidy by cleaning crates, kennels, and yards. Also helping with special maintenance and grounds keeping projects.

Thank you for your interest in Canine Assistants Volunteer program. Our 2008 class has reached capacity.

Please check with us in January 2009 for possible volunteer opportunities. Thank you.
